Our Craft Shop

To ensure exceptional quality while minimizing lead times and project costs, we strategically tailor our crafting operations by integrating three distinct processes based on project specifications. These include dedicated components for fully automated production of standard residential projects, CNC joinery machine production for precision, and hand-cut techniques for bespoke custom projects. This adaptable approach allows us to optimize efficiency and craftsmanship, delivering superior results that meet the unique needs of each client.

Procurement

The reliability of raw material quality, particularly moisture content, is essential for the precise production of timber frames. Recent advancements in Kiln Drying (KD) technology have enhanced the production of both dependable KD solid timber and lamellae for glue-laminated timber (Glulam). Following the implementation of the Quality Assurance Act, Glulam has gained popularity as a structural framing option. The elasticity modules of each timber frame component are critical for assessing strength in earthquake-resistant structures. Each structural Glulam is crafted from specifically strengthened lamellae to achieve the necessary elastic and shear module requirements. Consequently, both light and heavy timber constructions utilizing Glulam are increasingly favored in commercial and residential projects as alternatives to steel and concrete frameworks. We maintain a comprehensive inventory of Glulam and KD solid timber, featuring a diverse range of species to meet various project needs.

Structural Frame

Traditionally, glulam beams are crafted from uniform wood species for both inner and outer lamellae. However, Japan's market has recently introduced innovative Hybrid Glulam options, blending different species for enhanced performance and aesthetics. For instance, some hybrids feature Hinoki (Japanese cypress) on the exterior paired with Sugi (Japanese cedar) on the interior, while others combine Douglas fir for the outer layer with Sugi for the inner.

This advancement not only showcases the versatility of domestic species like Hinoki and Sugi but also incorporates imported varieties such as Douglas fir, Nordic red pine, and Nordic spruce. By leveraging the strengths of various wood types, Hybrid Glulam offers architects and builders greater design flexibility and structural integrity, making it an exciting addition to modern construction practices in Japan.

Roof-base panel and Sub-floor panel

Plywood lamellae typically consist of a blend of various wood species. In domestic mixes, you’ll often find Japanese cedar (Sugi), Japanese cypress (Hinoki), and Japanese larch (Karamatsu). For domestic and imported combinations, the selection includes Japanese cedar alongside Siberian larch and various North American species. This careful selection of materials not only enhances the structural integrity of the plywood but also contributes to its aesthetic appeal, making it a versatile choice for a range of applications in both residential and commercial projects.

Craft work

CAD data seamlessly integrates with the CAM system for machinery operations. Additionally, paper-based parts lists and drawings generated from CAD are utilized for material selection and finished product inspection. For handcrafted items, we employ both CAD-generated and handwritten drawings to guide the crafting process.

Machine Handling work

To minimize lead times and reduce material waste, we maximize the use of our pre-cut machines for frame component production. Our operations are supported by advanced dedicated machines and CNC technology, including five-axis and six-axis capabilities. Key equipment includes the Dedicated Joinery Machine for structural frames (columns and beams), the Hagara pre-cut system for sub-structural frames, and the Multi-cutter SC2 speed cutter for precision cutting of roof, sub-floor, and wall panels. Additionally, our Hundegger K2 CNC Joinery Machine enables custom-cut timber joinery, ensuring efficiency and quality in every project.

Hand Cut

To enhance value in specialized joinery and artistic frame designs, we complement our CNC capabilities with the skilled craftsmanship of our experienced carpenters. This blend of advanced technology and human expertise ensures precision and creativity in every project, delivering exceptional results that exceed expectations.

Quality control

To ensure we meet our quality standards, we meticulously measure length, dimensions, and defects in timber before and after production using precision tools. Prior to any cutting—whether machine or hand—we diligently remove timber with defects such as side bends, twists, and significant knots. Precision is the cornerstone of our quality control policy. We rigorously verify the dimensions of crafted joinery against CAD drawings or handwritten specifications, followed by a thorough inspection for any material defects. Our commitment to excellence is unwavering, ensuring that every product meets our high standards.
